Thermal camera resolution and cost have been holding back the adoption of thermal imaging adoption for decades. No longer. The Owl AI Thermal Ranger® camera is coming soon … Stay in the loop by signing up for our newsletter.
The Owl Thermal Ranger® camera is built on a truly digital long-wave infrared (LWIR) sensor that Owl AI developed from the ground up. Every decision in that design serves one goal — SWaP-C: size, weight, power and cost low enough to put HD thermal where it has never been affordable to put it.
Its HD resolution delivers 3.5 times the pixel density of today’s most advanced analog thermal sensors while drawing 15 times less power per pixel — 0.3 microwatts. That is the difference between a thermal camera a platform can carry and one it cannot: a drone, a ground vehicle, a soldier-borne system, a car.
An analog-to-digital converter sits inside each of the sensor’s one million pixels. Converting at the pixel eliminates the analog signal chain that conventional thermal sensors depend on, and with it the drift and non-uniformity that chain introduces. Correction and calibration happen in the digital domain — which is why the camera runs shutterless, with no mechanical parts, no periodic blackout and nothing to wear out.
The result is a compact HD thermal core: 1280 x 800 at up to 120 frames per second, 12 volts in and digital video out over a single link, with Owl’s perception software for classification and ranging running on the same stream.
